Motanka

A Motanka is a traditional Ukrainian handmade doll, serving as a family amulet and a symbol of well-being, goodness, and hope. The word "motanka" comes from the verb "motaty," meaning "to wind," as these dolls are created by wrapping and tying natural materials like fabric, thread, and herbs without using a needle or scissors.

Key features of a Motanka doll include:

• Faceless design: The doll is traditionally made without a face, often with a cross made of thread in its place, to prevent an evil spirit from entering it.

• Amulet function: Motankas were believed to protect homes and families from misfortune, with special dolls made for newborns, brides, and for healing illnesses.

• Symbolic roles: Besides being a protective charm, motankas symbolized female wisdom, family lineage, and continuity. They were often passed down from mother to daughter.

Today, the Motanka remains a cherished piece of Ukrainian heritage, valued for its rich history and cultural significance.
